The Munster Juveniles "B" Cross Country Championships took place in Beaufort on Sunday, 3rd December 2017.

It was a great hunting ground for St Brendan's AC. In the U11 race, 2 of our athletes got individual medals: Aaron Horgan was 7th and Zach Walshe came 8th with brilliant runs in a huge field of athletes.
In the team race, Aaron and Zach led home St.Brendan's AC team to the bronze medals, with Eoin O'Flaherty, Darragh O'Flaherty and Matthew O'Sullivan running well in support.
There was another medal in store for Aaron and Zach as they were on the Kerry team which won gold in the inter-county race (first 6 from county scores).
The U9 race also brought medals for St Brendan's AC as Kevin Horgan, Ruairi Walshe and Max Fitzgerald were scoring members of the Kerry team which got bronze medals in the inter-county race.
Tom O'Flaherty was the club's representative in the U13 race and finished well up in another huge field of athletes.

Adults Strength & Conditioning (Circuit) training

Strength & Conditioning (Circuit) training is back for Autumn & Winter months.
Start date: Tuesday, 17th October 2017 at 8:00pm - 9:15pm
Venue: Ardfert Community Centre
Cost: €3 per session
Suitable for adults and teens over 16 years old.

Circuit training is a convenient way to exercise. It maximises the total exercise volume (number of sets, repetitions, and amount of weight) completed in a period of time. Exercises are completed in a row, and therefore, the time spent exercising is condensed. Separate cardiovascular training is not necessary. All body parts are trained in one session, and therefore, exercisers do not need to work out everyday.
Due to the lack of rest that circuit training demands, exercisers maintain elevated heart rates for the entire period of exercise. The combination of weight training and increased cardiovascular effort makes circuit training a beneficial type of cross training.

Benefits of Circuit Training (cross training):
"Simply stated, aerobic fitness develops faster than the muscular system (i.e. tendons, muscles, ligaments, and bones). For example, you may be able to hammer out a long run or a tempo run at 8 minutes per mile and not feel aerobically taxed, but your hips aren’t yet strong enough to handle the stress of the pace or volume of the run and your IT band becomes inflamed.
This experience is very common for runners who get injuries such as recurring shin splints or other persistent aches and pains when they first start running. Their aerobic fitness is allowing them to continue to increase the distance of their runs because they no longer feel winded at the end of each run; their shin muscles, however, haven’t adapted to the increased pounding caused by the increase in volume and they quickly become injured.
Therefore, it’s important that new runners and injury-prone athletes include ancillary routines, such as general strength training, into their weekly training plans to speed the development of the muscular system. In doing so, you’ll improve the strength and resiliency of your muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones and enable the muscular system to keep up with your aerobic developments.

What is holding you back from running more mileage and faster workouts each week? It isn't your aerobic system, but rather your body’s lack of resiliency toward increased mileage and harder, longer workouts.

Boys U11 was another very competitive race over 1500m and our club had more success individually and in team competition. Five St.Brendan's AC runners line up at the start of this race. Aaron Horgan took the lead after the first 100m and not let anyone pass him to the finish line winning gold medal. There was more success in this race when Zach Walshe finished 5th (bronze medal) and St.Brendan's AC team place second overall in team standing.

Next race with our club member was Boys U13 with Tom O'Flaherty running 2500m and finishing in the middle of the pack, doing well considering that he just came second in Tralee Junior Parkrun few hours earlier.

Kerry Juveniles Track & Field Championships 2017

This year the Kerry Juveniles Track & Field Championships took place later in the year due to refurbishment of running track in Castleisland.

Day 1 was held on Wednesday, 5 July 2017
St.Brendan's AC had 11 athletes competing -
Girls: Ashlyn Falvey (U9), Laura Falvey (U10), Lilly Nowak (U12), Daisy Nowak (U14), Rebecca Falvey (U15), Clodagh Donnelly (U16).
Boys: Matthew O'Sullivan (U10), Eoin Malik (U10), Darragh O'Flaherty (U10), Eoin O'Flaherty (U11), Tom O'Flaherty (U12).
That was an evening of sprints and was a good day for the Falvey sisters with all 3 getting silver medals in sprints:  Ashlyn & Laura in 60m, Rebecca in 100m.

We also had Matthew O'Sullivan (U10) Eoin O'Flaherty (U11) and Clodagh Donnelly (U16) qualifying for their respective sprint finals but finishing outside medal positions. Getting to the final was already a big achievement considering that only top 2 from each heat qualified for semis and finals.
Laura Falvey stepped up to U11 category in Long Jump and finished in 3rd place to add a bronze medal to her silver medal from sprints.
Last event on the night (under floodlights) with St.Brendan's AC athletes in action was girls U16 800m with Clodagh Donnelly finishing 3rd and earning her first medal in the blue of St.Brendan's AC.
Other good performances on the day by our club members - Daisy Nowak, 5th in U14 High Jump, Tom O'Flaherty in Shot Putt U13, Darragh O'Flaherty and Eoin Malik in 60m sprint U10, Matthew O'Sullivan in 60m sprints finishing just outside medal position in 4th place, Lilly Nowak finishing with 5th fastest time in the heats of 60m sprint in girls U12.

Due to competition taking place so late in the season we were short of a few athletes to field relays on the day.

Day 2 of Championships was set for Saturday, 15 July 2017.

Forecast for the day was good and we welcomed 16 club athletes to compete on the day:
Girls: Ashlyn Falvey (U9), Laura Falvey (U10), Lilly Nowak (U12), Daisy Nowak (U14), Rebecca Falvey (U15), Clodagh Donnelly (U16).
Boys: Kevin Horgan (U9), Stephen Shanahan (U9), Max Fitzgerald (U9), Matthew O'Sullivan (U10), Eoin Malik (U10), Darragh O'Flaherty (U10), Eoin O'Flaherty (U11), Rory O'Halloran (U11), Aaron Horgan (U11), Zach Walshe (U11), Tom O'Flaherty (U12).
We started the day on a high with Daisy Nowak winning silver medal in Girls U14 Race Walking at her first time competing in this event.

Our next medal arrived with Ashlyn Falvey, when she won gold medal in Girls U9 Long Jump with very consistent efforts.

Her older sister, Rebecca also claimed a gold medal in Girls U15 Long Jump.
It was a long day with all the long distance races taking place and there was one race our club members were especially looking forward to - boys U11 600m. St.Brendan's AC had 3 boys competing - Aaron Horgan, Eoin O'Flaherty and Zach Walshe. All boys are very strong runners and this was evident where Zach took the lead half way through the race with Aaron in second place. With 60m to go, Aaron accelerated to finish first with Zach in second and Eoin in 5th place.

St.Brendan's AC got one more medal in distance running with Clodagh Donnelly finishing 3rd and getting bronze medal in Girls U16 1500m.

As the track events were in full swing, our youngsters tried some field events where Eoin Malik make final of Boys U10 Turbo Javelin, Aaron Horgan making top 6 in Boys U11 Long Jump and Lilly Nowak moved up one age category and finishing just outside medal position in 4th place in Girls U13 60m Hurdles. She also managed to finish 6th overall in the Girls U13 long jump.
We also had 2 relays teams competing in Boys U10 and Boys U12 category.
Boys U12 (Eoin O'Flaherty, Zach Walshe, Tom O'Flaherty, Aaron Horgan and Rory O'Halloran (sub)) narrowly missed out on the medal were once again finishing in 4th place.
Our second relay on the day was Boys U10 (Darragh O'Flaherty, Kevin Horgan, Eoin Malik, Matthew O'Sullivan and Max Fitzgerald (sub)) battled hard to finish 3rd and winning bronze medal.
Great effort by both relays!

It was great to see new members, Max and Stephen getting to try some events in Turbo Javelin and 300m.

A special mention to Tom O'Flaherty (U12) who is showing real potential as a multi event athlete as he competed in Shot Putt, High Jump, Sprint, Distance and Turbo Javelin events over the 2 days of competition. Same goes to Daisy Nowak competing in 7 events over the 2 days.
St.Brendan's AC would like to thank all coaches and parents who travelled to Castleisland for both days of competition and cheered the athletes on  or helped out on the day.
Congratulations to Listowel on winning "Best Juvenile Club" for 2017, well deserved.

AAI National Juvenile Track & Field Championships 2017 - Report

This weekend 8th & 9th July saw Day 1 & 2 of the National Juvenile competition taking place in Tullamore.

St. Brendan's AC had three athletes compete over the weekend.
First on day 1 was Aaron Malik fresh from winning gold at community games. Aaron was competing in the U17 Discus competition, unfortunately it wasn't to be his day as he placed in 4th place just outside of the medal position.

Day 2 saw Darragh Courtney competing in the u17 high Jump. Darragh jumped very well but wasn't near his best as he placed 2nd in the competition. Looking forward to seeing what Darragh will produce next year.

Finally Lauren O'Grady in the U18 Discus came 3rd in what was a very tight competition between 2nd & 3rd place with only 4cm in the difference! Lauren was very close to her personal best.

Well done to all athletes & enjoy a very well deserved rest!
